Developing countries are calling for the temporary suspension of patents on Covid 19 vaccines to speed up the fight against the pandemic. They are supported in this by NGOs. Suspending patents alone won’t do much good, others say. Rather, the technology would have to be shared.
Prof. Dr. Markus Scholz was interviewed by ORF as an expert on this topic. While Mr. Scholz sees giving up patents as a good approach, as it allows others to produce vaccines, he also emphasizes the need to share technology in addition to patents. This need stems from the technically complicated production process of vaccines. Platforms established by WHO that enable technology sharing in the coronavirus pandemic are currently not being used at all. For example, the „covid-19 technology access pool“ established in May 2020 has remained empty to date.
